American composer John Corigliano was born in and still lives in New York City.
His father was the concertmaster for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra,
and his mother was a pianist.
He has written more than 100 major compositions,
many of them award-winning ( he has: A Pulitzer, 5 grammy awards, and an oscar)
He is also a well-respected music teacher at the Julliard School and CUNY (he still teaches at 85!),
and has influenced many composers of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Fern Hill this is choral music (performed by a choir) listen around 5:00 for the most exciting part!

    I like the Red Violin by John Corigliano. It makes me feel sadness. It makes me see a rainy cloudy day at the ocean and a mermaid is looking for someone she misses. I like the singing too.

    (Warren Hylton's mom) - I was surprised that The Red Violin actually did sound very scary. Circus Maximus, though, sounded like a bunch of noise in the beginning then turned into recognizable circus sounds. Gotta love a circus trombone.

    My favorite song was the chorus of Fern Hill. Red Violin was not scary but Circus Maximus was spooky. Great work on winning all those awards and still teaching college!

      You need to 'fast forward' until 32:30 in the video for ''Circus Maximus'' then you will hear and see the sirens!

He was born in 1932 to a musical family- his father was a percussionist (instruments that you strike or hit like drums).  He studied music in college and played in the US Air Force band. During her lifetime (1819-1896), Clara (Wieck) Schumann (she was married to Robert Schumann another musician) was known as a concert pianist--in fact, she was considered one of the greatest pianists of her day! As a child, she gave her first public performance at age eight, and at eleven, she toured all over Europe. Since she performed the music of other composers, her own compositions were not often performed during her lifetime. Today, Schumann's music is very well known, and now you know her music too! Leave a comment. American composer Steve Reich uses Ostinatos in almost all of his music. He took piano lessons as a child but did not decide on a career in music until he was in college. Reich said this about his inspiration: "I became a composer because I'd heard the  Rite of Spring  of  Stravinsky , I'd heard  Bach 's Fifth Brandenburg, I'd heard bebop —  Charlie Parker ,  Miles Davis  — music that had a lot of rhythmic energy, music which was finally harmonic. I know the  Rite of Spring 's harmonic quality is not that of Charlie Parker. Neither are they that of Johann Sebastian Bach. But they all had what Stravinsky called the magnetic attraction, the polaric attraction of sound." (NPR-2016) He is considered to be one of the most influential composers of the 20th and 21st century, introducing the use of pre-recorded music in a concert and the use of ostinatos.
